Project i7 – StoryTelling (Photography)

  1. The story is based on two aspects of Pokemon, which is Responsibility and Evolution – A New Chapter. The reason why I chose this story is because as we get older, we get busier and have to anticipate the fact that we have more responsibilities to bear with as we get older.

2. I think that I did a decent job at least explaining the concepts. As long as I can get the readers to understand the idea that I am carrying out, then I will be fine. Here is the analogy: The way that Pokemon works is that Ash Ketchum starts in a very small town learning about Pokemon and admits defeats from gyms and opponents; yet, he applies these skills to open a bright future. While dealing with Team Rocket that always interferes with Ash’s journey, he uses his logic in order to stop Team Rocket from their plans. As Ash conquers and learns a lot more about Pokemon, he is able to successfully travel to very far cities within his region (Kanto) as well as to move to different regions to earn as many gym badges as possible.

3. The picture that bests represent Responsibility and Evolution – A New Chapter is flipping frozen. During a semi slow shift, we wipe down the sides of frozen as well as using the sanitizer cups to clean the blender from the previous flavors. (especially, peanut butter which contains 8 allergens which are: milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soybean). Also, we restock the candy that is low and restock it as well as to put on the cap to prevent the candy from melting; thus, showing dedication and commitment to work.

4. Yes and No, Yes I have the intention by explaining how I was a kid back then and did not know any responsibilities at all to now where I know how to drive, to work and to attend school at the same time. However, someone may not understand the fact that this all these images that I posted correlates to one another. This shows how I grew up and learned right from wrong.

5. Next time, I would take photos that more related such as a photo of me working and being happy about my current job. Also, I would have more photos of me when I was younger and to have photos that show stepping stones in life to show how I actually grew up. Also, if I had to more time to discuss a more interesting theme, then I would have presented this over Evolution and Responsibilities – A New Chapter.

6. Yes, there are more photo stories that I would like to tell. My top themes would be Friendship, Childhood Memories, Work, and about How My Family Moved to the U.S. The reason why I came up with a new theme of my own which is Evolution and Responsibility – A New Chapter is because it is a mixture of Childhood Memories as well as Responsibility. What this really means is that I used some of my Childhood Memories as a reference to why I was not aware of responsibilities; yet, as I grew older, I had to bear with more responsibilities as well as to to be best I can.

Project i4 – Drinking and Drawing

  1. Here are the 6 photos above.

2. Yes it was very fun to spend time to draw these in order to distress from other major courses. Yes, it was frustrating because it is hard to get the most consistent piece of art. You expect it to be the best piece of art; yet, in reality, it looks a lot different. Yes, I will try again someday whenever I am available. The best way that I drew these the two trees and two people was to apply my past art skills as well as to draw as I look, so that way I can concentrate. What I drew on my Sonic Cup, was a rainy day. The way that I did it was to represent the drink as the sun, the tater tots as the clouds which is going to rain. I also drew a stick figure, as well as a stick extending the lime wedge to represent it as an umbrella. So, the whole drink art was a person holding an umbrella on a rainy day. The second way was to have a dark theme for sonic’s logo.

3. If I were to practiced for 100 hours, 1000 hours, or n! hours, then I would get a lot better because I learn the actual techniques of art such as smudging, shadowing, dabbing, etc. Once you apply these skills along with practice, you will highly improve your art as well as to evolve your old pieces of art.

4. My major is Computer Science. By the definition of art, art is a way to express human skills and imagination, which can be represented into a sculpture, a painting, or anything, which depends on their imagination. For example, the way that my previous computer science professor applied art into computer science is that he puts real world examples into python and java exercises. The best art of work that came from two years ago was the Music Theory project, which was written in python and it was supposed to play music notes such as single notes with or without the minor or major, and then letter scales as a whole.

5. Yes, drawing is a huge language of people’s feelings, a masterpiece, as well as an inspiring move in the 21st century. The secondary reason is to have an idea of how their childhood memories (video game, T.V. shows, etc.) still bond with them nowadays. Yes, drawing can say things that are hard to say with words. One example could be where they is a protest, and in that case, they have posters holding in front of the sky and to form a mob as a whole to stand up for their rights.

Idea #4 – Drawing is also a Language

1. Yes and No, I like to draw. Yes is because I can practice the techniques of art and then I get better at it. No, there are times that I do not like to draw is because it can be very difficult to get the best piece of art and that’s going to needs a lots of time and skill.

2. Most of the time, yes my art is awful to the point where I can’t stand to look at it. But, if I draw as I look at the object, then I have a better idea of what am I drawing as well as to see how accurate am I.

3. Nowadays, most of the people speak more than one language.

4. I speak two languages: English and Vietnamese mainly because my family is Vietnamese.

5. No, I do not find that different languages have different thoughts. The reason is that for the American New Year and for the Vietnamese New Year, because it is an entirely new year, so therefore the society expects us to have resolutions as well as to understand that we should not cause any trouble.

6. No, I have not seen nor made a drawing that said things difficult to say in words.

Artist Conversation #1 – Week 4: 2/11/20 – Glass Eyes by Jean Iwohara and Chanmealea Huy

  • Exhibition Information.
  • Artists: Jean Iwohara and Chanmealea Huy
  • Exhibition: No Redemption Value
  • Media: Ceramics, Wood, Drawing and Painting
  • Gallery: LBSU School of Art, Merlino
  • Website: jeaniwohara.weebly.com
  • Instagram: @jelly.jean
  1. Jean Iwohara is a senior undergraduate attending CSULB. She is majoring in Art; yet studying under, Illustration. Her work of art is anxiety intensive. Anxiety explores the internal and external forces and how it affects human activities along with the side effects. This theme also discuses the long term effects of anxiety and how it can get viewers to understand the importance of anxiety.

2. For the work of art, what they are saying is that everyone has inevitably been through a phrase of anxiety one way or another. Yes it is a large whenever all the pieces of art are stored in a room as if were to be a museum; however, by analyzing each art piece by piece, it becomes small pieces. Nearly the entire gallery’s pieces involved brightly colored paintings involved. Yes, most of the pieces of art that I saw was straight, the colors of them were very consistent and went along with other colors. There was that one piece that I saw which showed a small sign of jagged. That belongs to the picture that has the robot lady that is connected to the wall because the pipes of the wall or landline, yet starting to break as time flies by. The way I interpret that image as if the lady was feeling anxious about the robot starting to break apart. The second image that I see jagged is photo which has one girl gossiping to the other girl. There are zigzagged lines that transmit from one girl’s mouth and that is heading towards the other girl’s ear. Due to the fact that the girl is gossiping to the other girl, it seems that the other girl is getting anxious for every word she is getting towards her ear. Regardless of what she has said, the girl feels very shocked about what she said whether it was a lie or a rumor. But other than that, most of the art had straight lines because of the way that the background is designed such as the usage of straight lines to build the factory as well as to build the structure of which the two girls are sitting on. No, the pieces of art were not black and white just as if they did not have color. Yes, there are both muted pastel colors and vivid primary colors involved. No, it was not the tiniest piece of art that I ever saw; however, I had to come up closer to see the piece of art to see it at a good point of view. No, it was not so massive as a shark.

3. Here, I assumed that the very first piece before knowing anything was where it can represent jail because I can see the chain look very similar to handcuffs. However, when I asked her about the blue portrait which had a person tied to a chain: “Will you really save me?”. She intended to focus deeply on religious anxiety. Religious anxiety applies to Catholics and eastern religion such as Buddhism. Essentially, what religious anxiety is asking non distinct members of religion such as priests, nuns, bishops, and god. For citizens that attend church, they ask themselves, “I did so many actions for so long which ended up being disrespectful and tried to confess about commuting adultery; yet, will the moral sins be forgiven or not?”. After the conversation, she knew that her art of work had to involve anxiety. Each day, when she is drawing a new piece of gallery which takes her about two weeks, she always thinks about how her mom inspired her to be a good artist. Knowing that her partner Chanmealea Huy was not here today, I was told that her art of work also heavily focuses on anxiety, yet was a brilliant idea to come up with an art show that involves the same genre.

4. For every other images that I saw after the first one, I got very interested to see how all of the paintings were; however, there was one that stands out from the all the pieces of art that I saw, which was the photo which was from the article “Headache”. The reason why I chose headache artwork was because it was easy to analyze. The way that headache was supposed to be analyzed was to apply it to where you can find a time where we were frustrated. The easiest example was back when I was a senior in high school, I tried an AP class for the very first time which was AP Calculus A/B. I tried very hard and studied on my own; however, I did poorly on quizzes and exams which gave me so much stress and lead to a headache. Towards the end of the first semester, I studied my but off, which made feel better about calculus; unfortunately, after taking the final, I got a D for the semester. A week after my first semester of my senior year of high school, I was anxious to tell my parents about how I did in AP Calculus A/B because of my parents were Asian. Therefore, if I got a D in one of my classes, I would assume that my parents would scold me for it. In reality, my parents were cool with me taking my first D in an AP class because I did not need to take that class in order to graduate high school and it was my first time trying a class way harder than a normal class. Yes, this resonates to her as well because for obvious reasons. Just because they did not tell you that one person did bad on at least one exam, it is inferred that at some point in life, someone will perform poorly and to take it as a grain of salt. The second reason why this resonates with her is because there were times that she felt anxious of how much more work is needed to be considered good art as well as to express times where she felt anxious about real life situations. Although I learned that anxiety is definitely a lot more than human anxiety, it is very inevitable that humans will feel anxious at some point in their lives. Also, anxiety plays a big role and has inspired many artists to draw many pieces of art which involves anxiety.

Project i3 – Finding Art

  1. Here is the picture.

2. Form: the physical appearance of the object, but in this case, it is a first handed photo frame. Aesthetics: a sort of philosophy that involves the nature of beauty, in which turns out to be the 3 pink mini flowers which are surviving with the leaves. Content: the piece of art is supposed to represent satisfaction to viewers, which the flowers and leaves represent prosperity.

3. No, our piece was not art before using duct tape and masking tape because without the tape to know what is the star of the show, it is just a mini garden to where students see the ground, leaves, and flowers.

4. Unfortunately, art will not be the same whenever the photo frame is removed will not be art because the masking tape and duct tape which constituted the photo frame tells other viewers a message.

5. Art resides in the body of the object is prosperity. What prosperity (symbolically) is is that there are only a few alive flowers, which give prosperity such as providing wealth to your family as well as to have good luck to your family. The dirt/wood represents death, which is dark and sad; yet, possibly bad luck. The leaves represents nature to which it represents hope, love, good luck, and faith. The part that is art but not really “art” is the poles and the duck tape because without those structures, they cannot hold and will not support the tapes to create art.

6. Yes and No, art can be something rather than an object specifically. No, is where if I see an object that means nothing “significant” to me, such as a laptop, which people need for daily tasks. Yes, is where if I see an object or a group of objects (visual representation) as a whole such as childhood memories, or something that highly interests me.

7. Again, this answer will be very subjective, so that way, I will be agreeing to both sides. Yes, art does reside to the viewer, whenever he or she feels like it means a lot to them such as their “childhood memories” and something interesting/anything that will interest them. Most likely, when there are couples, they will more likely look into art more quite often, but not always tho. No, art does not reside to the viewer because at times, he or she are is not dedicated into art. They look at it for just a second, and then walk away. I believe that time == art. Art could be considered time consuming and an excuse (break) from studying from other core courses.

Art Idea #3 – You can Find Art Anywhere

  1. To find art, the very first place to look is at the museum because they have galleries of art paintings (on the wall). You can also look at pieces of Art in an Art class or wherever they sell galleries of Art.

2. What people are expecting to look for is the following of the above: the appearance of the art, the meaning of the art, and most likely the message that the artist wants to have viewers to understand.

3. The way you know that a piece is really art or not, is how much time they put into the piece, the meaning of the piece (if it means a lot, then they’ll have a really fun time otherwise, it means nothing to the viewer – depending on their interests btw).

4. Yes and No, art can be everything. Art can be everything where as if they are still exploring on what to do in their lives. But other than that, art can be everything depending on when their interest is developing or changing. What is not Art is where, you obviously get in trouble or getting a ticket by the police.

5. A curator is a person who is in charge of managing as well as acquiring art collections in museums, or any other places that store pieces of art.

6. Yes, a curator is different that an artist because the artist is the person paining the art; while the curator is the one being responsible for anything that happens to the piece of art.

7. No, Social Media has not quite killed loitering.

8. A flanuer is a french term that which a person which idles or lounges.

Project i2 – Finger Painting

  1. The experience of finger painting was very good. Also, it let students do some freestyle of which direction that they want paint to go to as well as how to execute their finger painting. Kinda challenging at the same time.

2. I expected the finger painting to be easy; however, due to the fact that I was on a budget and went to DAISO for cheap watercolor paining and for other supplies, the watercolor did not last that long, so I tried to create my SONIC logo from work and it took a lots of watercolor painting (tedious) and kept repeating the process: which is to create watercolor paint, and draw with your fingers, until it looked like my work logo.

3. Making a painting with no content was both exciting and frustrating. The reason why my painting had no direct content was because I drew random dashes and patterns along with my work logo which viewers could say “what does this mean” and to the author like me for example: It could mean a decent amount is to me is because I get to experience finger painting to see how it was like for me as well as to see what skill I need to develop to have better finger painting. I learned that maybe for a professional finger painting, I would need to spend more money into it. And I learned that watercolor painting may not be the best quality for finger painting; yet should use thicker paint next time. Knowing that it is just for an activity, I chose to be on a budget.

4. To compare other paintings I have seen versus my finger painting, I immediately see a huge difference on why their paintings look significantly better than mine. The first reason is due to the fact that they used a paintbrush while we can only use our fingers. Second reason is that the quality of their color paints is significantly better than my work. Well, we get what we pay for and how much time we spend right? Well, in most cases, that’s correct!

Project i1 – Maintenance Art

  1. What felt amazed when I got to participate in the maintenance art activity. When I was cleaning it, it needed to be cleaned just to know that it looks the sculpture look nicer. Most people interpret the piece to be a whale: the first 2 pieces of sculpture represents the body of the whale. While the last part represents the tail of the whale or part of an attend. While we were doing this activity, there were people passing by and asking “What’s going on here: how interesting”?. The interesting thing was we saw the engraving on the sculptures which show its age. If there was rust which was irremovable, then it shows even more about how long has it’s been around.

2. Mierle Laderman Ukeles cleaning the steps of an art museum and Richard Serra flinging molten lead against the walls of an art museum was different because it seemed like Mierle was assigned the duty of being a janitor which is inferred to clean the toilets, the floor around campus, as well as to clean the stairs. In that case, Mierle’s act does not seem like art because in the picture, she had the equipment to mop the stairways as well as to clean the floors. Unlike Richard Serra, which he lead against the walls of an art museum was different than Mierle’s act because in the photos, he was in a sculpture maze, which could mean abstraction is there, which there was. That sculpture was maze is definitely a piece of art because of it could represent the blueprint or the base of a factory which is not finished yet.

3. No, it does not seem like Mierle Laderman Ukeles’ Maintenance Art performance was at Wadsworth Atheneum “art”. The reason is because by the image that we were provided about Mierle, it seemed like she was hired as a janitor. When I searched up images for Wasdsworth Athenuem art, it turned out to be a lots of artifacts as well as paintings, which patrons pay for their ticket to see cool artifacts and paintings. And for every painting, there should always be a message and a different representation for each meaning. For example, looking at the deceleration of independence painting, you can tell that it represents the timeline of the 18th century as well as realism or any other theme. The message was that they were signing the declaration of independence, and for those who have signed it to tell Great Britain to stop taking control of us, some of their lives were lost (tragedy).

4. Yes, this can be very subjective. Once again, an action or an object can or can be art, depending on popularity. Just like an analogy we discussed in class, there are people that paint their houses for different intentions. In that case, there are two cases: (A) a man to paint the house versus a (B) women who decorate their house, so when guests come over, it would very nice. In case A, the man needs to paint the house to do the bare minimum in which is paint the walls white to protect the wood from getting molded. Yet on the other hand, a women first needs to paint the house to ensure that the house is not molding. Then, the woman can put hours into decorating the house for a living, which is considered art because of the women is spending more time and money to make their house as creative as possible. Therefore, I believe that time is a huge factor into art. The more time they spend, the more that I believe that that activity is going to be art. Yes, painting on canvas could be art because due to the fact that our huge fan Kobe Bryant passed away just last week, his painting on canvas will become art due to popularity. And by the Bryant tribute, if his canvas had his official signature, then over time the price of Kobe Bryant’s canvas is going to increase.

5. Yes, Mierle Laderman Ukeles has made me think differently about “Women’s Work is also Art” because she has showed me visually what’s right versus wrong. Because employees that I’ve seen are mostly men in the professional field such as nursing and where I work, it yet does not mean that there are more women than men. Because Mierle Laderman Ukeles got hired as a janitor, which most of them are men, it means that we have to respect women employees as well. Where I work right now, because it is fast food restaurant and there are more men workers then women workers, it does prove to be a counterexample of saying: “All of my managers are men”. It’s true that in my case, most of the managers tend to men, yet there is also 1 assistant manager which is a women. Therefore, I shall consider, Women’s Work is also Art to where we should welcome wore women workers rather than mostly men workers.

6. If I were to have the time to go down all the way to Hollywood for the Walk of Fame, and clean one of all the stars, I would clean Mickey Mouse due to the fact that the figure has created at least half of my childhood memories. At least half of the movies that I watched was made from Disney. A quarter of my moveis that I watched had Mickey Mouse in the movie. Mickey Mouse is a masterpiece that no Disney Fan shall ever forget even if the actor for Mickey Mouse passed away. Also, another thing to point out is that there are many references associated with Mickey Mouse such as Funko Pops – vinly figures of Mickey Mouse, and video games such as Kingdom Hearts.

Art Discussion # 2 Week 2 – Abstraction is Freedom

  1. I first heard of abstraction where if it were to be a research paper. Essentially, an abstraction is a brief summary of what the paper will be about. A second definition is the process of thinking outside the box with such little detail provided, which users can apply more than one area of ethics into the situation.

2. Abstraction is where users can apply more than one area of ethics into the situation. Yet on the other hand, representation means that is the way that the original owner represent themselves through an art piece (which may seem like someone dumped the leftover of paints, or could a master piece which someone could understand what they are portraying, in which it could be a message from the author such as displaying the theme). Even though answering the question could have very subjective answers, it is not just like as if it were to be binary (in Computer Science, it represents strictly 2 options: Option A or Option B). But in this case, I rather stick with representation because it fits me more and it can lead straight to the point (where as if where the author makes a work of art to represent themes: realism and romanticism, which we should be able to understand).

3. Texture and Configuration:

Art Discussion #1 – Women’s Work is also Art

  1. “Women’s Work” is the act that is created by women. Tasks such as include cooking, house chores such as washing dishes, laundry for the family as well as to support their children to ensure that they are safe. In the workforce, there are both men and women; however, there are more men and women in the professional fields due to maternity leave. The second thing “Women’s Work” means that their beauty also counts for how women play in society (first appearance) in order to attract men.

2. Art is defined in many ways. The basic definition of art is the variety of physical paintings, music, sculptures, etc. The second meaning of art is the way of expressing of how human beings feel, ideas behind literature, and conceptual ideas (romanticism and realism). A strinder definiton of art defines as the open ended result of creation and imagination in such a way that other viewers will show respect to the original artist or owner.

3. The phrase “Women’s Work is also Art” has the word “is” in it, so that way, they are declaring the fact that Women’s Work is also Art rather than saying “Women’s Work should also be Art”. Because of social norms, women feel like they hold less power than men. But in that case, when a women says “Women’s work is also art”, they are standing up for themselves proving that women shall also have right just like men, so that way they won’t constantly feel like they are weaker than men. To prove that, being the only daughter will be a pain to them due to the fact that when my brother and I slept at my grandpa’s house, last summer, then my parents always expect the daughter to be home more than the male siblings. To prove that Women’s Work is also Art, my older sister always to have a sleepover occasionally with her friends, my parents finally let her do every now and then. Thus, it proves that women’s work could be when they are allowed to hang out with friends at Big Bear.

4. This will lead into the post of project i1 – Art Maintenance.
