Art Activity #6 Shocking Art 3/1/20 – Expectation vs Reality

According to the McDonald’s App, the current price of the big mac is about $5.28 after tax.

  1. The reason why I chose the idea Expectation vs. Reality is because is to show the truth behind fast food restaurants. The McDonald’s advertisement shows that the Big Mac seems like a very big burger. In reality, the big mac from McDonald’s is $5 to $6, but when we actually sit down and get ready to take the very first bite of the burger, it feels like the size of a kids’ burger but a little big bigger and the taste is mediocre. Yet on the other hand, In N Out Burger, a very popular burger joint is known its burgers. Unlike McDonald’s, In N Out has the double double burger or double double protein style which is a little bit cheaper than McDonald’s, and it looks almost exactly the same as the advertisement on the drive through menu. At the end of the day, when I compared the two burgers, the quality double double from In N Out was significantly better than the big mac from McDonald’s.

2. The idea that I was trying to communicate was the idea that the society is looking for reality over advertisements. Reality is the statement of how real or how true is one person, group, or industries are. One example of reality are television shows such as the Super Bowl and American’s Idol. On the other hand, an expectation(s) is the statement how one person should behave or how should situations play out morally. Examples of expectations such as how Asian parents expect their children to do well in school, or if someone were to get sick or an emergency happened to them, then an assistant manager, shift leader, or a general manager can ask a random person to cover a shift or ask a person that is already scheduled to work to come in earlier.

3. Hopefully, my explanations of expectations vs reality and the examples that correlate to it make sense to the reader and if that is the case, then I will be successful towards explaining the differences. In order to clarify my explanations, I chose an easy example which is fast food restaurants advertisement vs what the burger actually looks like when the customer receives the food.

4. If I were to do the concept of expectations vs reality again someday, then I will do another more obvious example of fast food restaurants. The one example that concerns me the most is The mac n’ cheese from Panera Bread. According to TikTok, a video sharing service, a former employee of Panera Bread exposed how the mac n’ cheese is made. The expectations of the mac’ n cheese was that it was supposed to be made in the kitchen the day when a customer places an order. Due to the a leak from TikTok, it comes a bag of frozen mac ‘n cheese and in order to heat it up, they do is boil it in hot water.

5. Another idea that I would like to share besides “Expectations vs. Reality” is social norms and how the society lives up to social norms.
